First, they spoke of killing off their beloved Viper name tag. Next, they sold it all to Cerberus under the Chrysler flag… Now, as if Dodge hasn’t been struggling enough (due to financial crisis and horrific gas prices) – the mighty Ram may soon be under a combined General Motors/Chrysler symbol. But with any merger, someone has to be cut from the team. Will it be Dodge?

Is it us, or are they getting crowded in here?

With a possible GM+Cerberus love affair there may be too many cooks in this kitchen. Let’s face it, you already have Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealerships struggling to sell another Dodge Ram or PT Cruiser thanks to their less than 30 MPG ratings. Wouldn’t it make life a little difficult to browse the lot of your local Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Chevy-HUMMER-GMC-Buick-Pontiac-Caddy and possibly Saab & Saturn dealer? If nothing else, it’s a search engine marketing nightmare for your internet manager!

Ok, so all those makes and models on one lot are not a realistic scenario, more likely someone will get cut.

Luckily, Dodge has the nostalgia coin in their pocket. With revived interest in models like the Challenger a little bit of old school muscle car fandom might be one plus, which will keep Dodge afloat during a trying financial crisis and a possible hostile takeover. With Wall Street’s latest huge dip, merger discussions have been put on hold…for now.

Unverified reports from a “Chrysler executive” may come as a happy surprise to neo-nostalgic car lovers – A 2009 Dodge Challenger could be yours for as little as $23,995 base price. You won’t get the SRT8 model, just your basic V-6 (or possibly V-8? Perhaps that’s wishful thinking) for little more than a base V-6 Ford Mustang. You can still shell out approx $40,000 for your more powerful SRT edition – but if you’re looking to cruise in style without breaking the bank hope that Chrysler’s prediction comes true. Keep in mind, an official price for a base V-6 Challenger has yet to be released.

Tough times for our economy and everyone is fearing recession, or worse. Consumers have lost faith in the American Dollar. Car sales are down, and it looks like the situation is going to get worse before it gets better. Sales of domestic cars were not the best to begin with. To help, Chrysler LLC has taken Dodge and Jeep under their umbrella, and is combining many dealerships throughout North America to sell all three brands. But can a classic name like Dodge end up falling off the face of the Earth? In these turbulent times nothing is certain. DodgePedia has a few ideas how Dodge can continue to flourish through good times and bad.

3. Muscle – Flex It

Car enthusiasts love the roar of a powerful engine, and you can’t deny that drivers want to go as fast as possible; we all have places to go and less time to get there (or so we believe). Now well into the 21st century, the industry bares witness to a nostalgic peak in car purchasing. Ford’s new Mustang GT and Bullett models are eye catching and perform well on the road, as well as with buyers. Dodge, which resurrected the Charger a few years back, now steps into the nostalgia design ring with an all new Challenger. And what does Dodge’s Challenger bring under the hood to back up their record pre-sale requests? How about a 6.1-liter V8 SRT HEMI for starters.

Green muscle cars? It may sound like an “oxy-moron” – However, With the Chevy Volt and Dodge Zeo concepts stirring up auto industry experts you may soon be able to reach 65 mph in under 4 seconds, while saving Mother Earth. If nothing else, powerful electric vehicles will keep your ear drums from popping down at the drag strip. They sure do look different…And speaking of looks…

2. Design – Flaunt it

Again, nostalgia is key in today’s high end car market. Drivers want the safety of a space age vehicle with the looks of a 1960’s classic. Dodge is already on it’s way to claiming the classic car lovers’ hearts with the 2009 Challenger. Looking more like The General Lee than the new Charger, Challenger has already fascinated Auto Show audiences across the globe. Fresh looks and new ideas will always help keep you ahead of the pact.

1. International Growth

When you can sell in North America, why not give the UK a try! Chrysler recently expanded their Dodge Jeep Chrysler products to overseas markets, in an effort to take a larger chunk of UK change and to spread the word (world wide) that Dodge is a name you can trust. Just last month, Chrysler UK moved forward with a plan to merge their three-brand dealerships and give English car lovers a shot at owning a reliable and recognizable American made automobile.

One of the first automotive design studios to open in California during the 1980’s will soon close its doors. Chrysler announced they will move all design responsibilities to their office in Auburn Hills, placing 20 employees of the Pacifica Advance Product Design Center out of work (or, at least, out of work with Dodge). Two of the best selling Chrysler/Dodge prototypes came out of their Carlsbad, California studio; the Chrysler 300 and 2009’s Dodge Challenger. Company heads calls this closing “part of the ongoing consolidation of our North American business…” Hmm…

Chrysler/Dodge wants to be known as “the best little car company in America” according to the maker’s president in a recent interview. We’re assuming he means North America, since Chrysler/Dodge serves both the United States and Canada with their vehicles. Winning back the American spirit by way of muscle car will certainly help in that market, once Dodge Challenger hits the sales market that is.

However, this is only the beginning steps for Chrysler to build everlasting customer trust throughout the world. That’s right, soon European car buyers will be able to drive past the Thames in a Dodge Charger or take the family “on holiday” in their Journey. A global volume of 3 million cars is what Dodge execs are shooting for – no small “challenge” in a world interested in Toyota and BMW. How will Chrysler/Dodge achieve this result and still make a buck? The plan is to design identical vehicles for all countries. Both Dodge and Chrysler will create concepts appealing to those wanting something “identifiably American,” no matter where they live in the world.

2009’s Dodge Journey crossover was their first experiment – revealed in Europe before showing off on American soil. It can be equip with several different transmissions and a diesel engine for foreign buyers, but the outer shell will be a twin to the American vehicle. Chrysler 300 and Dodge Caliber models already do well overseas because they “stand out.” The next Dodge Challenger may have to be a bit “thinner” to fit down those narrow century-old England roads.
