Dodge reached back to muscle car roots when naming their Dart concept. Images across the web hinted to what this four door sporty sedan would look like. At this week’s North American International Auto Show, Dodge made the 2013 Dart go public.

Dart receives the honor of being Chrysler Group’s first vehicle built on top of Fiat’s architecture, named a Compact US Wide or CUS-wide.

“2013 Dodge Dart is wide, ranging from millennials, young professionals likely buying their first car, to empty-nesters, those with active lifestyles who appreciate good value but don’t want to sacrifice quality and amenities in their choice of vehicle.”

Dodge Dart buyers get to choose from three separate four-cylinder engines, along with a mix of three transmissions in this front-wheel vehicle.

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 160-horsepower, as well as 160-horsepower 1.4-liter turbo and 2.4-liter 184-horsepower, all come with either a six speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic.

As for this lively design, front and rear end on Dart borrows from two other Dodge sedans: Avenger in the grille, and Charger out back. 2013′s Dart also sports dual exhausts.

According to the Chrysler release, Dart “offers a special blend of style, performance and innovation” similar to the late 1960′s model.

Dodge is bringing back Dart, and we’re excited! It began in the late 1960′s as a super-fast Mopar muscle car. Unfortunately, Dart kind of died off in popularity thanks to the 1970′s gas crisis, which pretty much exterminated the muscle car industry.

Dodge has revealed its Alfa Romeo–based compact car for 2013, and announced that Dodge Dart will debut in January at the Detroit Auto Show. “The Dart features three engines and three transmission options and aggressive styling reminiscent of the larger Charger,” according to Inside Line.

Sadly, reports also state that Dodge Dart will be Front-Wheel-Drive, not a muscle car. Alfa Romeo’s Giulietta is not as long or wide as Dart will be. This is because Americans love some big cars! It will be the exclusive compact car offered from this auto maker.

Dart will have three different inline-four-cylinder engines: a 2.0-liter, a turbocharged 1.4-liter, and a 2.4-liter Multiair.

2.0 and 2.4-liters are part of Chrysler’s new engine family. Both make 158 and 173 horsepower, respectively, and come with direct injection.

The turbo will allegedly be similar to that found on board Fiat 500. This powerplant makes 170-hp, yet it delivers better fuel economy than the other engines.

Growing up in the 80′s I had to beg my parents to let me stay up and watch Married…with Children. They felt it was too racy for me to watch, with all the dirty jokes and Kelly Bundy cleavage that even FOX wouldn’t get away with in today’s overly FCC’d world. One of the series’ best running gags was the beat up Dodge Al Bundy drove (or pushed) into his driveway each week. It was a bit of inside humor for me, since both Mom and Dad had Chrysler-produced vehicles (K-Car and Acclaim respectively). And it was always hilarious to hear Al yell “No Brakes, No Brakes!” when he slammed into the garage.

“Love and marriage…”

But there’s some controversey in the Bundy Clan. The “Mighty Dodge” was believed to be a 1974 Dodge Dart. However, DodgePedia is here to break it to all the Bundy Dodge fans: Al’s car was in fact a 1972 Plymouth Duster!

1972 Plymouth Duster, Al’s “Mighty Dodge”

If you want to be picky, go ahead. Both Plymouth and Dodge logos are under Chrysler’s flag, and honestly “Dodge” rolls off the tongue much easier. “It’s a name that speaks power and glory…Dodge.” Married…took many liberties mocking the Dodge name over the shows 200-plus episode run. In one episode, they paid homage to the “Dart” by finally cleaning her up. The Bundy family takes their vehicle to a car wash, where their car is quickly lost. Owners at the establishment offer up a newer automobile as replacement, but Al wants nothing to do with their offer. Later, a red Dodge is found parked behind the wash. Due to his copies of “nudie” magazines in the trunk it’s revealed “Dart’s” brownish-bronze color was actually 20+ years of dirt. Al and car are together again, and the clan jumps behind to give the reunited couple a push home. The true make of this TV car is a minor point, because thanks to Al Bundy proclaiming its name on various episodes Dodge has gone down in sitcom history as a great comedic device.
