Last year, we told you about an upcoming Dodge Concept that never made it past the production phase – 2008 Dodge Zeo. It was to be CDJ’s crowing achievement – combining a sports car with an all-electric layout…you know, that stuff Al Gore is always chatting about. As popular as alternative fuel/hybrid cars are nowadays, Dodge’s economic downturn left concepts like Zeo on the showroom floor.

But all hope may not be lost. Recently, 2008’s Zeo (Zero Emissions Operations) popped up at random car shows and press events. Chrysler Dodge Jeep has been working on new ad campaigns ever since their Fiat Merger. Could an electric car be in its Italian-made future? There’s no news on Zeo becoming a production car, at least until 2012 – so why has Dodge laid out a Zeo Microsite on their official web page?

It’s probably wishful thinking that Zeo, or a car like it, will see the light of day before 2020. We can all dream, right? I mean, look at these stats according to Dodge: Zeo is a “268 hp rear-drive motor,” sending driver/passengers from 0 to 60 in approximately 5.7 seconds. ZEO is powered by a 64 kilowatt lithium-ion batter pack. Think cell phone battery, only much, much, much larger. Price is something yet to be discussed, as ZEO is merely a case study for the moment. It has yet to be proven how a fully-electric vehicle would fare in the world of diesel and gas power (meaning mostly the United States).

Well, it looks like someone is still interested in Dodge, and fortunately (or unfortunately depending on which side of the political fence you live on) it is the US Air Force. Galpin Auto Tuners along with the United States Air Force have come up with an interesting recruitment tool. No, it’s not a video game – it’s an actual automobile. The Dodge Challenger Vapor is half car, half space ship – and all horse power.

The Challenger Vapor features radar-absorbing stealth-black paint, not unlike what is used to mask stealth bombers. The Vapor is set to run almost silently, thanks to “stealth exhaust” – whatever that means. Reminds us of when KITT used to go “Silent Mode” on Knight Rider. You need biometric verification to enter the cockpit via gull wing doors. The driver can view night/thermal vision projections on the windshield while sitting in a compartment that looks like something out of Crimson Tide.

If the driver doesn’t feel like getting out of their bunker he or she can command Vapor from a remote control system (even through internet) modeled after the Air Force’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The car reportedly gets somewhere around 500 horse power – but it’s true specs and top speed are being kept a tighter secret then what’s inside Area 51.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle and have a big load to carry—whether it is cargo or passengers—then you may have found your match. The 2008 Dodge Sprinter Passenger Van can seat up 12 passengers and has a multitude of customizable seating configurations. The 2008 Sprinter also comes as the Cargo Van and Chassis Cab, and it comes in either 2500 or 3500 ratings. The Passenger Van only comes as the 2500 (three-quarter-ton).

What powers this machine is either a 154 horsepower 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine or a 254 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine. The standard five-speed automatic transmission teams with each engine to create optimal comfort and performance levels.

The 2008 Sprinter measures in at 232.5 inches in length and gets a 144.3 wheelbase when the standard roof is equipped; the wheelbase jumps to a whooping 170-inch wheelbase when the driver opts for the high roof option. The tapered front-end, balanced proportions and Dodge’s well-known crosshair grille give this aerodynamic machine a strong road presence. With HID bi-xenon headlights in the front, this road-warrior can really handle its own.

The interior can blur any assumptions you have about a Van. Everything from the instrument cluster to the seats give the inside of the 2008 Sprinter what Dodge calls a “car-like atmosphere.” The two LCD tachometer and speedometer give the instrument cluster a classy feel. The comfort-level is heightened as well with things such automatic climate control and residual engine-heat system that speeds up heating with an electric hot-air auxiliary heater when everything is just too cold. Everything else from the power features, keyless entry, comfortable seating and a choice of two stereo systems simply contribute to the Sprinter “car-like” atmosphere.

Speaking of the seating, there are near limitless combinations of arrangements. The diesel engine models have standard 12-passenger seating and the gas engine vans get standard 10-passenger seating; the gas engine models have seven and nine-passenger seating options as well. The passengers have easier access as well because of the sliding doors that have a best in class low side step-in height and grab handles. Passengers get standard frontal airbags as well as optional side-impact and side curtain airbags. Other safety features on the 2008 Passenger Van include antilock brakes, an electronic stability system and the ParkSense Rear Park Assist System.

The Dodge Nitro compact SUV was revealed last year and returns in 2008 with new features and options. This youngster gets new technology such as the ParkSense system, new customizable features and a whole lot of other systems and options from which to choose. The 2008 Nitro can come in the base SXT trim, midlevel SLT trim and the high-performance R/T trim.

The Dodge Nitro base model runs on a 210 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 that can work with a six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. The higher-level models come with the 260 horsepower 4.0-liter V6 that runs on the five-speed automatic transmission. Both combinations offer rear and four-wheel-drive modes.

The 2008 model measures in at 178.9 inches with a 108.8-inch wheelbase. On top of this sits a strong shaped model that screams Dodge, partly because of the distinctive crosshair grille for which Dodge is famous. Dodge is releasing their Grand Caravan minivan model with refurbish styling, new standard and optional features, new transmissions and a whole lot more innovations for 2008. It’s no wonder the Grand Caravan is America’s best selling minivan.

The 2008 Grand Caravan runs on either a 198-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 or a 240-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2008 Dodge Caliber is a compact five-door hatchback wagon that blurs any assumptions. It takes styling cues from larger models such as the crosshair grille, flared out wheel arches and large front halogen headlights. The 2008 Caliber comes four trims including the SE, SXT, R/T and the all-new SRT4 high-performance model. No matter which trim you select, be prepared for a dazzling experience.

The 2008 Caliber has a number of available engines. Outside, ZEO appears to be a 2-door coupe…and it sort of is, but is it really? Well…we’re not sure. But you have to admit those scissor doors are very Blade Runner. The vehicle itself stands roughly the same size as Honda’s current Civic coupe.

Inside, ZEO shows off her curves every chance she gets. Even the seats look like something straight out of a graduate school’s visual arts program. And is that a steering-mounted shifter? Dodge’s ZEO concept has the looks and can dish out the speed future car buyers are going to be on the hunt for. However, is the world truly prepared to cut their “addiction” to fossil fuels? At $4 a gallon, maybe…just be sure to budget your electric bill from now on.

The Journey is best meant for such an excursion. The back end offers hidden cargo containers build into the trunk section, under the aft seats – perfect for a trip to Cosco. There are two glove boxes in the dash – the second being a chiller to keep water bottles or soda cans cool.

But you’re not only buying a car for how many Ikea desks can fit in the trunk. Performance is key when it comes to any Dodge vehicle. The base version of a Journey contains a 2.4-liter four cyl, sending 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque through the engine. The four-speed automatic delivers 19 mpg in the city and 25 in the EPA’s highway cycle. There’s also the V-6 2.7 liter engine sending you 186 horsepower but cutting your mileage down to 17 mpg city/23 highway.

Speed, strength and family fun – all starting at $19,985 (at least that is what Dodge is shooting for in an MSRP). Keep an eye out for the Dodge Journey in your area, and make sure you get one before your neighbor does.
